When the term “Bengali” comes up, the first thing to think of is good food. So here we could list few top restaurants of Kolkata serving authentic lip-smacking Bengali food. Say it be weekends, festivals, birthdays, holidays we bongs can happily hit some of the restaurants giving us great tastes. However variety of cuisine are being tasted but you must agree for few occasions we prefer only Bengali cuisine, and to get the best, we travel long, wait in queues etc. The typical dishes of Rohu, Hilsa, Pabda, Prawns are cooked in an exotic way in some nice fine dine restaurants. The curries made of mustard sauce, poppy seeds, coconut crumbs brings striking flavor to the dishes, then smoked fishes, kosha meat are specialties. bengali food suggests the names of dishes as such like Kalia, Dolma, Dalna, Ghonto, Chorchori, Paturi, Bhapa, Bhaja all sounds as well as tastes savory. And to add to Aam er Chutney, Misti Doi, Rossogolla . Kolkata has brought up many Bengali restaurants for people to relish on one of the most varied cuisine bringing out toothsome food, seeing the demand in people to go for Bengali cuisine. Some at their bests are listed below.

Being in Calcutta if you haven’t visited this place then you are missing some great Authentic Bengali delicacies. Don’t miss Kakra Chingri Bhapa, steamed Vetki and steamed ilish for starters. For mains You can order aam kasundi kakara, sorse illish, mutton curry and basmati rice. For deserts Nolen gurer ice cream is must have.

Another best thing available here, which is best in Kolkata too, “Illish Biryani”. I’m sure No where in the world you will get such a tasty Biryani.

H-Sepaetor01

rank2Aheli
Location : Peerless Inn, Esplanade & Axis Mall, Rajarhat
Timings : 12:30 PM to 3 PM, 7 PM to 10.30 PM
Cost : 1200 for Two [VAT Extra]

You may ask either for a Bhoj or individual dishe. Bhoj combines some typical Bengali dishes starting with Shukto and moong dal, to mutton or hilsa fish and ending with chutney, rajbhog and a misti pan.

The noteworthy items are the kakra r bora, Mocha r chop & Rui Mach er Patisapta in the starter, In the main course their Bekti Paturi is really good in quality. The Gondoraj Bekti is basically chunks of fish in a Gondhoraj lemon flavoured gravy item to be eaten with plain rice- good , but could have been better! Their Chingri r Bati Chocchori is a surprise since the prawns are steamed & then put into the spicy gravy & not fried!

Its a wonderful bengali restaurant. A must place for all bengali foodies. You will find all sorts of bengali delicacies. One can relish on the yummy bengali cusine. I had aampora shorbot, postor bora,Mourala bhaja, begun basanti, chitol muitha, Dhanepata chicken. All of what i had was mouth watering. Each and every item was so nicely prepared.I enjoyed distinct flavors of all.

rank4Tero Parbon [Triangular Park]
Location : 49 C, Purna Das Road, Near Hindustan Park, Kolkata
Timings : 12 Noon to 10 PM
Cost : 700 for Two [VAT Extra]

I have been to this place many times. Each time I am happy with the service. Though I must say that the prices are a little high than the quality of the food. You can find a wide variety of fishes in here. A retreat for fish lovers. They make great Shukto, Kosha Mangsho, Doi Murgi,Bhetki Paturi.

The decor is very nice, it will give you a feeling as if you have entered a traditional Bengali house. It is here I have first tasted ‘Nolen gurer Ice Cream’ and it has became my favourite dessert. They provide special menus on Durga Puja Season and Nabobarsha [Bengali new year] and Hilsa festivals.

H-Sepaetor01

rank5Sholo Ana Bangali [ Esplanade ]
Location : Rashbehari Avenue, Near Deshapriya Park
Timings : 12 Noon to 4 PM, 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM
Cost : 600 for Two [VAT Extra]

Everything about this restaurant is Bengali delicacies. when I entered the place, it was just like a north Kolkattan Home with little rooms. The tables, ceiling fans, wall paint are just like of 90′s.

You’ll find dishes like Daab Chingri, Stuffed Vetki, Barishali Ilish and Daaber Payesh etc. Both the quality of fish served and the fish preparations were excellent. You will be served in classic pottery. And the service is prompt and the waiters are courteous.

H-Sepaetor01

rank6Panch Phoron [ Kasba ]
Location : Kasba [Opposite Siemens], Kolkata
Timings : 11AM to 11PM
Cost : 800 for Two [VAT Extra]

This is a new place in town. Its a little food joint serving quite good Bengali dishes. I dropped in here on Poila Boishak and savored most of the menu. The menu was limited although you can choose many.

They offer both veg and non veg.All of them are typical Bengali delicacies. The Bhetki Paturi was very good, soft and nicely flavored, Pulao has a nice aroma. The Kosha Mangsho, Special Chicken are favorites for Bengalis and those were cooked tender and tasty. The Chitol Peti was cooked in a rich and spicy gravy which tasted good but the fish did’nt seem much fresh.

The main prob with this place is that its too small, it can accommodate utmost 15 people at a time. Since its new, I didn’t find much of crowd. The decor is simple yet nice.Mostly they do home deliveries, which is a nice option if you stay near by.

Every year around this time Oh! Calcutta hosts Hilsa festival keeping in mind Bengali’s affection for Illish Mach. In Kolkata a cold war between Ghoti and Bangal is well known from the football ground to kitchen everywhere they try to take over another. But Illish of Bangal has always got top rank in Bengali Cuisine over Chingri of Ghotis. Both of them are serving Bengalis taste buds for centuries but somewhere Illish starts the race a few feet ahead of Chingri.

Oh! Calcutta has arranged this festival with variety of items made with Illish among them Smoked Hilsa, Grilled Hilsa, Fried Hilsa and also very Common Hilsa Broth will get major attention. This festival is till 15th August. The availability and quality of Illish has been deteriorated for past few years. So the price of the items are a bit high though. But according to their chief chef they don’t want to compromise on quality.
